Independence Day

I could write about many things today, but I just saw the last 20 minutes of Independence Day. I had classified it as a "not worth the time" film when I first saw it a few years ago, but today I got reminded of a few details that made me laugh again at the stupidity of the whole thing.

It seems every spaceship out there lacks basic firewalling: we saw it in SW: A New Hope and SW: Revenge of the Sith. Independence Day goes way further when the good guys use a virus to destroy the powerful enemy.

There are other good moments, like when a young couple in the military base, under attack, say "we'll die being virgins, but we'll die together", or when a few jewish people are praying and ask someone else to join them... He objects: "but I'm not jewish", and the priest (or whatever) says "nobody's perfect". Excellent!

That's at least why I like the movie, it's not a particularly "good" movie, but it's fun and makes fun of itself a lot.

The sad thing is that Independence Day is meant to be a serious film about American values or whatever. It clearly doesn't try to make fun of itself in any moment. I wonder if the average patriotic American finds anything really funny in that film.

I always liked the way the rest of the world are all hanging around waiting for orders from the Americans. And as usual the Brits have a bizarre 1950s accent staight from BBC World Service.

That speech the President makes is amongst the worst speeches in annals of film history. Still, the film had some quite funny gags in it.

Absolutely, ffub. And the Russians, in a dark HQ, smoking cigarretes while they receive the morse message.

When they defeat the first big ship, the President says, while walking calmly away from his fighter: "now the rest of the world knows how to defeat them". Thank You, POTUS!

A friend of mine saw (at the time the movie was
released) that he hated the fact that the American
president is the hero that save the World, it was so
ridiculous.

Now, every time I remeber this fact, I agree more and more with him.
